Creating a Culture Online site for the UK’s Department for Culture, Media and Sport, Brighton-based digital media group Cogapp engaged AIG creative director Malcolm Garrett to work with Colin Jenkinson and his team to design the visual identity, iconography and interface for ICONS – a portrait of England, with accompanying printed material and branding guidelines.
ICONS is a rich resource of material about the people and heritage of England. Teachers use it to stimulate classroom learning, and the inspiring content sparks visits to arts venues and events. Symbols of England from mini-skirts to the pub, the Domesday book to queueing, are represented in a grid of iconic buttons leading to extensive resources, publications, images and references.
ICONS was launched with 12 subjects in January 2006. Three years on, there are now 79 Icons, nominated by visitors to the site. These link to histories, knowledge tests, galleries, lesson plans, competitions and numerous other engaging ways of learning about the history and culture of England.
