Companies House – a division of the Department of Business Enterprise and Regulatory Reform – is the official register for all businesses in the United Kingdom. It collects and manages information from around 4.5 million companies and their directors every year, using almost 300 different forms.
The Companies Act 2006 introduced numerous changes to the information that is collected and increased the number of forms required by 40%. Applied Information Group was commissioned to evaluate the design of existing forms and recommend improvements to make them easier to use and manage, avoid typical mistakes and reduce spoilt returns.
AIG investigated the statistical evidence about usage and conducted usability tests before developing a series of recommendations, including a clear hierarchy for form numbers with accompanying descriptors, using plain and simple language, separating instructions and guidance, and employing a cleaner, structured typography and layout. The design rules were systemised into elements, structures and sections, making the forms more consistent and easier to adapt for future requirements. The recommendations are currently being implemented.
