Rapid growth, a convoluted street structure and poor public information made Bristol a hard city to navigate. Tim Fendley and Sam Gullam led a multidisciplinary team that evaluated the problem before developing an information and wayfinding system to address it.

The aim of Bristol Legible City is to enhance people’s understanding and experience of the city. This is achieved through a mix of information, transportation and identity projects, including a directional sign system featuring both city and area maps, printed walking maps, visitor information, identity projects and public art schemes. All together, some 40 communication projects have been implemented as part of the scheme. AIG continues to work with Bristol City Council on development of the scheme – most recently with the Brunel Mile.

Led by Bristol City Council, the scheme involves a large network of public and private stakeholders. It has won Local Town Planning Awards and the DBA Design Effectiveness Award for Environments.
